Juke

As sports fans know, juking is the runner’s art of faking out an opponent through sudden, unexpected shifts. It's one of the most enjoyable aspects of the game, with the defender juked out of his shoes, grabbing empty air where the runner should be... artful, graceful and quick, ballet, magic and athleticism combined, and just a lot of fun to see.

In this piece, the players toss material back and forth, make sudden shifts and unexpected moves, and confound expectations to juke each other and, hopefully, their listeners.

It is scored for two marimbas and was composed in 2013.

Performed by Christina Cheon and Ayami Okamura on July 9, 2016 at Chapman University, as part of the Southern California Marimba Concert Series.
